The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen ability to connect with our vibrant undergraduate students, sustain an active research program, and contribute to the life of the institution through faculty committees and other co-curricular service.

Preferred Qualifications: Our department is excited to welcome a new colleague who is devoted to providing our students with the personalized attention befitting a small, faith-based institution. Strongest consideration shall be given to those who are able to teach upper level Old Testament courses, biblical hermeneutics, and biblical Hebrew.

DESCRIPTION

The Biblical and Theological Studies program seeks to provide students with opportunities to understand, delight in and witness to the Scriptures as normative for faith and life, in conversation with the Anabaptist-Mennonite and Evangelical traditions, the larger Christian church, and the world. It seeks to instill a sense of and appreciation for the breadth of the Kingdom of God, with its great diversity of backgrounds, points of view, and religious affiliations. All Fresno Pacific University students are required to take two Biblical Studies courses, intended to provide students with both academic and practical opportunities for learning and growth within the broader community of Fresno Pacific University’s General Education program. Courses are designed to promote improvement of skills for reading and understanding the Bible in its literary and historical contexts as well as within the context of a contemporary learning community, regardless of the student’s own world view. The interactive approach to learning is intended to move students beyond knowledge and understanding to doing, living and being.

ROLE
• Teach 24 units/year of assigned courses in the Biblical & Theological Studies program, including (primarily): BIB-100/300/314 Jesus & the Christian Community, General Education Biblical Literature courses, General Education Biblical Perspectives courses
• Participate in and provide departmental, campus, and community service
• Maintain an active scholarly agenda
• Collaborate with Biblical & Theological Studies faculty to maintain excellence in the delivery of the program
• Advise undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Biblical & Theological Studies

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
• Earned terminal degree in biblical studies or related field (candidates with a master’s degree, or those nearing terminal degree completion, may be considered);
• Record or promise of scholarly achievement;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Ability to cross cultures and to understand and advance diversity;
• Ability to address and model the integration of Christian faith and the field of biblical studies;
• Experience in, or aptitude for, college-level teaching of both traditional-aged and adult students;
• Ability to travel among FPU’s campuses as necessary;
• Ability to network and work harmoniously with faculty, staff, administration, and students in a regional university with its foundation in the liberal arts and sciences;
• Commitment to the Christian faith and the University’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local church.

Preferred
• Commitment to an Anabaptist theological orientation;
• Disciplinary expertise and primary area of research in Old Testament (Hebrew Bible); New Testament expertise will be considered;
• Bilingual with the ability to speak and teach, preferably in Spanish and English.

COMPENSATION: Dependent on qualifications and experience and paid out over 12 months. Full-time benefits include insurance (medical, vision, dental, LTD), retirement (TIAA-CREF), Section 125 options.
